One of them is that he is the only driver in the history of NASCAR to have conquered the DAYTONA 500 – the ultimate test of a racer’s mettle – seven times. In 1981, Richard Petty had just recovered from a broken neck suffered in a crash the previous season.
His team had switched from driving Oldsmobiles on Superspeedways to Buicks.
And NASCAR had just made a rule change that impacted the wheelbases.
With the odds stacked against him, Petty bided his time during the race, and made his move at the end, staying out during a pit stop and then not taking tires when other drivers did.
The result? His seventh win in the DAYTONA 500 and the first win for Buick since 1956.
